Summary

Kasbah alleys, sea caves & camel rides across Tangier’s wild edge

You’ll slip through Tangier’s tangled streets with a local guide, gaze from ancient Kasbah walls over two seas, explore Hercules’ legendary caves by Cap Spartel, ride camels along wild Atlantic sands, and share laughter over mint tea on a Medina terrace. Every stop feels personal—unexpected details linger long after.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I’ll be honest — I didn’t expect Tangier to feel so layered. The morning started with Mohamed Ali (our guide) waving from his car outside the hotel, grinning like we’d known him for years. We zigzagged through the city’s wide boulevards and suddenly dived into the old Medina’s maze. The air smelled of oranges and something spicy I couldn’t quite place. Mohamed pointed out where the old American Legation sits tucked between shops selling leather slippers and heaps of bright spices. I tried to pronounce “babouche” right — he laughed and shook his head.

We wound up at the Kasbah, where cats lazed in patches of sun on ancient stones. It was quieter than I expected; just a few locals chatting in Arabic, their voices echoing off whitewashed walls. Inside the Kasbah Museum, Mohamed told stories about sultans and pirates that made me forget my phone for once. Then came that view — blue sea meeting sky, Spain somewhere out there beyond the haze. I still think about that moment when everything felt both close and impossibly far away.

The drive to Cap Spartel was all salt wind and eucalyptus trees whipping past the window. At the cliffs, you can see where the Atlantic crashes into the Mediterranean — it’s loud and weirdly peaceful at once. Down below are the Caves of Hercules; cool stone under your hands, damp air smelling like seaweed. The cave mouth really does look like Africa if you squint (Mohamed insisted). And then there were camels waiting by the beach — taller than I thought! Riding one felt clumsy but kind of hilarious; my friend nearly slid off sideways but the camel handler just winked at us like it happened every day.

Lunch was up on a terrace in the Medina overlooking rooftops patched with satellite dishes and laundry lines. Tagine bubbling hot, mint tea so sweet it made my teeth ache — honestly I could’ve sat there for hours watching life swirl below. There’s time to wander after: little craft shops where we watched someone hammering silver jewelry by hand. Mohamed helped us haggle for a scarf (I’m still not sure who got the better deal). The whole afternoon blurred into color and sound until we finally tumbled back into Mohamed’s car, tired in that good way you get from seeing too much in one day.
