The Experience

"You see those palms? My grandfather planted some," our driver Youssef said as we wound through the Anti-Atlas hills, his hand tracing the window glass. We stopped at Banana Village—Youssef called it Imouzzer but laughed when I tried to repeat it—and grabbed mint tea from a tiny café where everyone seemed to know him. There was something about the way people greeted each other here, a kind of gentle patience. After that, we zigzagged into Paradise Valley itself. The air changed; cooler, with a hint of river stone and wild herbs. Our guide pointed out almond trees and explained how locals still press oil by hand. I tripped on a rock (classic me) and got my shoes wet crossing a little stream—didn’t even care because suddenly there were these deep turquoise pools just ahead.

I’ll admit: I hesitated before swimming. The water looked cold and clear under the cliffs, but after five minutes watching kids leap in laughing, I went for it. It felt like every worry rinsed off. We had maybe an hour or so there—enough time to dry off on sun-warmed rocks and watch dragonflies skimming above us.
