The experience
The trek starts with a drive from Marrakech through the Atlas foothills to Imlil, where you meet your support crew and begin hiking. You'll climb gradually through the Toubkal Valley, passing Berber farming villages and stopping for lunch on the trail. The first day's 6-hour hike gains 1,540 meters as you ascend to the refuge at 3,200m, where dinner and a bed wait after you settle in with other hikers.
Day two begins in darkness. You wake early and start the final ascent, climbing 967 meters over rough terrain to reach the ridge. The last push to the 4,167m summit is timed so you arrive as the sun rises over the mountains. After resting and taking in the view, you begin the long descent (2,530 meters down), back to Imlil, where your support crew and the air-conditioned vehicle are waiting. You'll drive back to Marrakech and arrive at your riad in the early evening.
Mules carry your luggage both days, so you hike with only a daypack. Your mountain guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one of nine other languages. The crew provides all meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) plus tea and coffee throughout the trek. You sleep in the refuge, a basic mountain shelter where hikers from different countries often gather after a long day on the trail.
