The Experience
We met Hassan outside the guesthouse just after lunch — he had this quiet grin and handed us scarves to wrap around our faces. “For the sand,” he said, showing me how to tie it so I wouldn’t eat half the desert by accident. The quads were lined up right there at the edge of Merzouga, engines already humming a little. I’d never driven anything like this before, but Hassan just nodded and said, “Slow first, then you’ll feel it.” He was right — after a few bumpy starts (and one embarrassing stall), we were off.
The Sahara feels different when you’re riding over it yourself. I could smell dust and something almost sweet in the air — maybe date palms somewhere nearby? The wind stung my cheeks but it felt good. We followed our guide into these rolling dunes that looked endless from the seat of the quad. Sometimes we’d stop and he’d point out animal tracks or tell us about Berber families who still cross here by camel. There was this one spot where everything went quiet except for a distant call to prayer drifting over the sand — I didn’t expect that part at all.
At some point we switched to buggies for a bit (my friend wanted more speed), then tried sandboarding down a steep slope. I fell twice and laughed so hard my scarf nearly came off — Hassan just shook his head like he’d seen it all before. The sun started dropping fast behind the dunes, turning everything gold-orange. It’s funny, but even now I can feel that dry heat on my skin when I think about it.
