The Experience

I didn’t realize how much I needed to get out of Marrakech until we were halfway to the Ourika Valley, watching the city’s noise fade in the rearview mirror. The air felt cooler, almost sharp, and there was this faint smell—something between wet earth and mint tea. Our driver, Youssef, kept pointing out little villages tucked into the hills. I tried to remember their names but honestly, I just wanted to stare out the window for a while.

The first stop was an argan oil cooperative run by local women. They let us try grinding the nuts ourselves (I was terrible at it—one of them laughed and showed me how her hands move way faster). There was something comforting about that room: chatter in Berber, oil stains on aprons, bread baking somewhere nearby. I bought a tiny bottle even though I’m not sure what I’ll use it for back home.

Setti Fatma’s waterfalls are louder than you’d expect. Our guide, Hamid, led us along these narrow paths—sometimes slippery with spray—and told stories about growing up in the valley. At one point he stopped so we could catch our breath and pointed out wild thyme growing in cracks (“for tea,” he said). Lunch by the river was simple but perfect: tagine bubbling away while my feet dangled just above cold water. I still think about that view—sunlight flickering through poplars, kids skipping stones nearby.

We visited a Berber house too; sweet mint tea poured high into glasses and homemade bread warm from the fire. The family barely spoke English but somehow it didn’t matter. There’s a kind of hospitality here that doesn’t need words. The drive back felt slower—I guess nobody wanted to return right away.
