The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the smell — not perfume, but something deeper. Eucalyptus, sharp and green, mixed with the faint warmth of steam as we stepped inside the hammam in Marrakech. The tile under my feet was cool at first. Our host, Amina, greeted us with a nod and a smile that felt like she’d seen every kind of tired traveler. She handed me a robe (so soft I almost didn’t want to give it back), and honestly, I was nervous — I’d never done a Moroccan bath before. Didn’t expect to laugh so much when she explained how the black soap worked; she mimed lathering up like it was second nature.

I lost track of time during the scrub. There’s something oddly comforting about letting someone else take over for a while — just letting go. The eucalyptus scrub tingled on my skin, not harsh at all, more like waking up after a long nap. You can hear water splashing somewhere nearby and people speaking softly in Arabic and French. Afterward came the massage with argan oil — 40 minutes but it could’ve been hours for all I knew. My mind drifted; I kept thinking about how this ritual has been part of Moroccan life forever, passed down through families. At one point I caught myself grinning for no reason at all.

We finished with mint tea (or water if you prefer), sitting quietly in fluffy towels while outside traffic buzzed somewhere far away. It’s funny — you come to Marrakech expecting chaos and color, but here it’s just calm and warmth. When Amina waved goodbye as we left for our transfer back to the hotel, my skin felt new and my head clearer than it had in weeks. I still think about that eucalyptus smell sometimes when I need to slow down.
