The experience

We got picked up right from our hotel in Marrakech. I was still half-asleep and clutching my coffee, honestly. The city faded fast behind us, replaced by this dry, golden hush. At the edge of the desert, our guide Youssef handed out these blue Touareg scarves (he called them “cheech”) and helped us wrap them around our heads. He did mine twice because I kept messing it up. He just laughed and shrugged, like, “It’s all part of the fun.” The air smelled faintly dusty but not unpleasant, and there was this odd calm even though I could hear distant birds and a donkey somewhere.

The camels looked a bit grumpy at first but turned out to be total softies. Climbing on is awkward. You sort of swing your leg over and hope for the best while the camel groans dramatically. Once we started moving, everything slowed down. You feel every sway as you ride through the sand. It’s weirdly soothing after a minute or two. Youssef walked alongside us most of the way, telling stories about nomads who crossed these same trails ages ago. He pointed out some wild herbs growing near the path. I tried to smell one but mostly got a nose full of sand (he thought that was hilarious).

About halfway through our camel ride in the Marrakech desert oasis, we stopped for mint tea under a little tent.
