The experience

You start at PK 28, the pickup point near most Dakhla hotels and kitecamps. The guide briefs you on sand pilotage and the Can-Am's handling before you mount the two-seater buggy. The 1000cc engine is the most powerful in the region, and the flat desert floor ahead is built for it: hard-packed sand that lets you open the throttle without the vehicle bogging down or pitching.

The route runs straight to Speed Spot, a lagoon famous among riders for its wind and its surface. You'll stop there for photos, then push on to a viewpoint overlooking Dragon Island, one of Dakhla's landmarks. The whole session runs one hour. A certified guide rides with you, handling route-finding and safety while you drive. The guide speaks English, French or Arabic depending on your preference.

Helmet and goggles come with the buggy, along with bottled water. Fuel is included in the price. The ride is intense, high speed across open sand, so the operator recommends it for travelers in good cardiovascular health and with no spinal injuries. Children from age 6 can ride as passengers.
