The experience
The Kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou is not a film set alone. It is a ksar, a fortified village whose maze of narrow, crenulated towers tells the story of nearly a thousand years of settlement. What you walk through today is mainly from the 17th century, when the village thrived as a strategic stop for caravans numbering hundreds, carrying gold, silver and slaves south from Marrakech and salt north from the Sudan. Beyond the ramparts lie grain threshing areas. Inside, the village holds everything from small palaces to one-room dwellings, a public square, a mosque, a caravanserai built to house traveling merchants, and a fortified granary at the top: the last stronghold in time of invasion.
Your guide walks you through the layout and history of these spaces, pointing out the communal areas that kept the village functioning and the private quarters that sheltered families. Two cemeteries, Muslim and Jewish, sit within the fortified walls. The tour lasts between one and three hours depending on the pace and how much ground you cover. Coffee or tea is served during the visit.
What’s included
