The experience
The trek begins at Tagadilt and climbs into Jbel Saghro through landscapes of rock and open plateau. Day one covers roughly 5 to 6 hours of walking, ending at a bivouac camp at Imi n'Ourg where you sleep under canvas. The second day pushes higher: you ascend Mount Kouaouch to around 2,597 metres, taking in views of the rugged terrain before dropping to another camp at Agli. Day three is shorter, about 3 hours of walking through mountain valleys to Tadaout n'Teblah. The final day moves through Berber villages and mountain scenery for 4 to 5 hours, finishing at Bab N'Ali with its impressive rock formations.
Each night you stay in a traditional wilderness bivouac camp with a tent. Meals are cooked on site using local ingredients and traditional Moroccan recipes. Your guide is a live person who speaks English, French or Arabic and knows the route, the villages and the landscape. The trek is built around what you do (walk, eat, sleep in the mountains) rather than stops or viewpoints. The hospitality and the Berber culture emerge from the villages and camps you move through, not from a schedule of visits.
This is a mountain trek, not a guided walk with frequent breaks. You need a high level of physical fitness and should be comfortable carrying a pack and walking on uneven terrain for several hours a day. The bivouac camps have basic shelter but no running water or electricity. Bring your own water bottle and sun protection. The guide and the camps provide food and shelter.
What’s included
- Accommodation in wilderness bivouac camps with tent.
- all meals cooked on site using traditional Moroccan ingredients.
- a live guide who speaks English, French or Arabic.
