The experience
Three and a half hours takes you through Montserrat's forest to a sheer rock face that transforms into a 100-foot waterfall when the rains come. The hike is moderate, with one short steep climb, and the guide (James 'Scriber' Daley, MBE) walks you through the island's ecology and history as you go. You'll learn about cocoa, one of Montserrat's old trading crops, and watch for the Montserrat Oriole, a bird found nowhere else on earth. The trail also passes a forest stream where crayfish live, and from December through April the heliconias, the island's national flower, bloom in vivid color along the path.
An air-conditioned vehicle picks you up and brings you back, so you don't need a car to reach the trailhead. Natural wood walking sticks are provided for the steeper sections. Groups stay between 1 and 30 people, keeping the experience intimate without feeling rushed. The hike suits anyone aged 12 and up with moderate fitness. The steep climb is short and manageable for most hikers.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is the Montserrat Oriole and where do you see it on this hike?
The Montserrat Oriole is a rare bird found only on Montserrat. You'll watch and listen for it throughout the forest sections of the trail, especially in the quieter stretches where the guide points out its habitat and calls.
Does the dry waterfall actually have water in it?
The waterfall is dry most of the year, but becomes a dramatic 100-foot cascade after heavy rain. The rock face itself is always visible and striking. The guide explains the seasonal flow and the geology that creates it.
How do I get to the trailhead if I don't have a car?
Air-conditioned vehicle pickup is included in the tour, so you're collected from your accommodation and driven to the start of the trail. Public transportation options are also available nearby if you prefer to arrange your own transport.
When are the heliconias most colorful on the trail?
The heliconias bloom most vibrantly from December through April, filling the forest with bright color during those months. Outside that window, you'll still see the plants and other forest flowers, but the peak display happens in the first four months of the year.
Is this hike suitable for someone who is fairly fit but hasn't hiked much before?
Yes, the trail is moderate and designed for ages 12 and up with at least moderate physical fitness. The one steep climb is short, and walking sticks are provided. The guide sets the pace and can adjust for the group's comfort level.
