The experience
Eight to ten hours of hiking means the day starts early and ends late, with the bulk of the effort concentrated in the sustained climbs. The route begins with a steep, long ascent toward a high mountain pass, where the views open across the Dinaric Alps. Once you crest the pass, the trail drops steeply down to Trnovačko Lake itself: a heart-shaped alpine lake with turquoise water that sits on the Montenegro-Bosnia border. The descent is a relief, but it matters for the return: the same steep slope becomes a grinding climb on the way back, so pacing and energy reserves are not optional.
The wild swim at the lake is the reward and the turning point. The water is cold and clear, and the setting is remote enough that you feel the isolation. After time in the water and a short rest, the hike reverses: the steep ascent back to the pass, then the long descent to the trailhead near Mratinje. On the drive to and from the hike, you'll pass Piva Lake and the Mratinje Dam, a concrete arch structure carved into the canyon, its turquoise reservoir a preview of the color waiting at the summit.
Pickup starts from Pluzine and includes the transfer to the trailhead and back. Water, snacks and lunch are provided, but you carry them yourself. Bring a backpack rated for the load, boots with grip, weatherproof layers, and the fitness to sustain steep terrain for hours. This is not a walk. It is a mountain test. Fit hikers with prior alpine experience find it rewarding. Everyone else should consider a different route.

Is this one for you?The guide speaks English and leads groups of fit hikers only. If you have previous alpine experience and train regularly, you'll find the pace manageable. If your mountain fitness is untested or recent, this full-day climb will exhaust you before the return descent, and a shorter route is the better choice.
Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
How steep is the hike to Trnovačko Lake?
The route features sustained steep climbs and equally steep descents. The ascent to the high mountain pass is long and demanding, and the descent to the lake is sharp. The return journey reverses this terrain, so the same slope you descended becomes a strenuous climb on the way back.
What is Trnovačko Lake like when you reach it?
Trnovačko Lake is a heart-shaped alpine lake with turquoise water, straddling the Montenegro-Bosnia border and set high in the Dinaric Alps. The setting is remote and serene, and the wild swim is the centerpiece of the day: a cold, clear immersion after hours of climbing.
What do I need to bring on this hike?
You must bring boots or shoes with good grip, weatherproof gear suitable for mountain conditions, and a capable backpack to carry food, personal items and at least 2 litres of water. Water, snacks and lunch are provided, but you carry them yourself throughout the day.
How long does the full hike take?
The hike lasts 8–10 hours total, including the ascent to the pass, descent to the lake, wild swim, and the return climb and descent. This is a full day of hiking with no shortcuts.
What is the Mratinje Dam, and will I see it?
Mratinje Dam is one of Europe's highest concrete arch dams, holding back Piva Lake in a dramatic canyon. You'll drive past it on the way to and from the trailhead, where its turquoise reservoir offers photo stops before your mountain climb begins.
Is this hike suitable for someone with mountain experience but not recent fitness?
No. The operator specifies this is for fit individuals with previous mountain experience. The sustained steep climbs and the long return ascent demand strong cardiovascular fitness and regular training. If your fitness has lapsed, a different route is safer.
