You sleep in a ger with a working nomadic family, not in a hotel.

A 2-day tour of Mongolia combining the Gobi Desert and the ancient capital Kharkhorum, with an overnight stay in a nomadic family's ger. Day one includes a 280km drive to the semi-desert sand dunes, camel riding, and dinner with your host family. Day two covers Kharkhorum's Erdenezuu monastery, horse trekking, and the return to Ulaanbaatar. Lunch is provided both days, and a live guide in English or German leads the group.

The experience

The tour starts with a hotel pickup and a 280km drive south to the Gobi's semi-desert landscape, where massive sand dunes rise from scrubland. Lunch happens at a roadside stop along the way. Once there, you can hike the dunes or spend a couple of hours on a camel before heading to the nomadic family's camp for the night. Dinner and breakfast happen in their ger, and you stay overnight in the same structure: canvas-walled, heated by a central stove, furnished with felt rugs and low beds.

Day two begins after breakfast with the family and a drive to Kharkhorum, the thirteenth-century capital of the Mongolian Empire, situated on the Orkhon River about 400km southwest of Ulaanbaatar. You explore Erdenezuu monastery, the spiritual center of Mongolian Buddhism, then ride horses through the surrounding landscape until midday. Lunch follows in Kharkhorum itself before the drive back to the city.

The tour runs with a live guide who speaks English or German, and bottled water is provided throughout. Hotel pickup is included, and all fees and taxes are covered in the price. Three tour tiers are available (Smart, Comfort, and Luxury), so you choose the level of accommodation and transport that fits your budget.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want to stay with a real family rather than in a tourist ger camp, and if you have two days to combine desert landscape with Mongolia's historical heartland. The overnight with nomads is what makes the cultural immersion genuine instead of staged.
