Discover Teotihuacan’s stories over home recipes and a pulque tasting

A day trip from Mexico City to Teotihuacan that starts with breakfast at a local family's home, moves through the ancient city's Avenue of the Dead and Pyramid of the Moon with an anthropologist guide, and ends with lunch and a pulque tasting back at the family home. Small groups travel in a van rather than a tour bus, and the guide shares the archaeology and stories of the people who built the site.

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Teotihuacan and family traditions

  • Meet at Parque México at 7:30am
  • Breakfast at grandmother’s home
  • Explore Teotihuacan pyramids and sites
  • Lunch at grandmother’s home with mole dishes
  • Taste traditional pulque and liqueurs
  • Return to Parque México by mid-afternoon

The experience

You meet at Parque México at 7:30am and head north to the family home before the pyramids. Breakfast there is coffee, hot chocolate, traditional Mexican tea, fresh fruit, eggs and sweet bread: the way the family starts their own mornings. The guides are anthropologists who grew up in this region, and they want you to sit down with them and their grandmother rather than move through a checklist of stops.

After breakfast, you drive to Teotihuacan and spend the morning walking the Avenue of the Dead, climbing the Pyramid of the Moon, and exploring the temples and plazas. The guides talk through the archaeology, history and the people who lived in this ancient city, not as a script but as people who know the place. Depending on site access that day, you may also visit the Temple of the Feathered Serpent or the Beatriz de la Fuente Museum of Teotihuacan Murals.

You return to the family home for lunch, where the red and green mole are made from recipes passed down through generations. These aren't restaurant versions. They're the dishes the family has eaten at home for years. After lunch comes a tasting of locally made pulque, natural pulque, distilled pulque, and two traditional liqueurs made with prickly pear and nopal. The family is part of the cooperative that makes them. By around 3:00–3:30pm you're back at Parque México, having spent a full day with people who live in Mexico rather than people who work in tourism.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 17 years); Infant (under 3).

What is the Pyramid of the Moon and what do you do when you get there?

The Pyramid of the Moon is one of the two largest structures at Teotihuacan, standing at the north end of the Avenue of the Dead. You climb it during the morning exploration, walking through the ancient city's layout and seeing the temples and plazas that surround it.

Can I ask the guides about the history and archaeology while we're there?

Yes. The guides are anthropologists, and they bring the ancient city to life by talking about its archaeology, history and the people who built and lived there, not just pointing out the structures.

What exactly is pulque and why does the family serve it?

Pulque is a traditional fermented drink made from the agave plant, deeply rooted in Mexican culture. The family is part of a local cooperative that makes it, and they serve natural pulque, distilled pulque, and two liqueurs made from distilled pulque with prickly pear and nopal to share a tradition that is part of their region and their daily life.

How many people travel together on this tour?

Groups stay small and personal. You travel in a spacious, air-conditioned van rather than a large tour bus, which gives the day a more intimate feel and lets the guides share stories and traditions without rushing.

What's included in the meals at the family home?

Breakfast includes coffee, hot chocolate, traditional Mexican tea, fresh fruit, eggs and traditional Mexican sweet bread. Lunch features the family's red and green mole recipes passed down through generations, served with other homemade Mexican dishes, followed by the pulque and liqueur tasting.
