The Experience
“You’re not scared?” our pilot grinned, right as the burners whooshed above our heads — that deep, warm sound I’ll never forget. We’d barely left the ground near Teotihuacan when the air shifted from chilly to soft and golden, and suddenly the pyramids were just… there, below us. I kept trying to take photos but honestly, my hands were shaking a little (not from fear — just excitement or maybe the altitude?). There was this faint smell of coffee drifting up from somewhere on the ground — or maybe I imagined it. Either way, it made me hungry.
The whole valley looked different from up there. Our guide pointed out the Avenue of the Dead and tried to teach us how to pronounce “Teotihuacan” properly (Li laughed when I tried — pretty sure I butchered it). The flight certificate they handed out at landing felt like a silly detail at first but now it’s tucked in my journal. Right after we landed, everyone clapped like we’d finished a show. The sparkling wine toast was simple but felt special — cold glass in hand, sun still low, people grinning for no reason.
Breakfast was at this local spot nearby — nothing fancy but real food, eggs with salsa that woke me up more than the coffee did. Some folks went off to walk through the archaeological zone after (tickets weren’t included for that part), but honestly I just wanted to sit in the sun a bit longer. If you’re looking for a hot air balloon tour over Teotihuacan that feels safe but not stuffy, this is it. Still think about that view sometimes when I close my eyes at home.
