The experience
You start from a meeting point in Tuxtla Gutiérrez and travel by air-conditioned vehicle to the canyon. Once at the water, you board a shared boat and spend the morning sailing through Sumidero Canyon on the Grijalva River, where the rock walls rise steeply on both sides. The guide points out crocodiles, birds and other wildlife native to Chiapas as the boat moves through the canyon's narrow passages.
After the boat ride, you climb to the canyon viewpoints (except on Tuesdays, when the tour stays focused on the river). From the rim, you look down into the geological formation and across the landscape. The final stop is Chiapa de Corzo, a colonial town where you can walk through streets built in Mudéjar style, the architectural approach that gives the town its distinctive character in Chiapas.
