The experience
You start before sunrise. Hotel pickup happens at 6:30 a.m., and the boat meets you at the bay where the sun comes up over the water. From there, you're in your own kayak, not watching from a boat, paddling across the Gulf of Mexico toward Island of Sacrifices. The paddle itself is part of the experience: you move at your own pace, and the guide stays with the group. On the way, you might spot turtles or dolphins, though sightings are not guaranteed.
Once you reach the island, you anchor and switch to snorkeling. Parque Arrecifal Veracruzano is a protected marine park, and that protection is what keeps the reef intact. You descend with your guide diver (who is certified and speaks your language), and explore the reef structure. The guide leads, but you control your descent and your time underwater. If conditions allow, you can briefly land on the island itself, though wandering is not permitted due to Navy law and reef protection rules.
The return paddle takes you back to the starting point. One-way shuttle is included. Return shuttle is not, so plan accordingly. The whole activity runs 3 hours and is subject to weather changes. The Gulf can shift fast, and safety comes first. Bring a swimsuit and water shoes. Everything gets wet. Do not bring electronics, jeans, or accessories you cannot afford to lose. You need to be able to swim, and you should tell the guide about any health conditions (asthma, allergies, cardiovascular issues, or pregnancy) before you start.
