The Experience

I’ll be honest, we almost missed our pickup because I couldn’t find my other sandal (classic me). But our driver just grinned when I apologized—said it happens all the time. The van was blissfully cool inside, which felt like a small miracle after the sticky morning air in Riviera Maya. Our guide, Sofia, handed us cold water bottles and asked if we’d slept well. She actually seemed to care. I liked that.

First stop was Yal-Kú Lagoon. We got there so early it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves—just us and a few herons picking at the shoreline. The water was glassy and cold at first touch; I hesitated but then just went for it. Snorkeling here is different than I expected—the fish aren’t shy at all. Sofia pointed out some blue tangs and something she called a “sergeant major.” I tried repeating the Spanish name but mangled it so badly she laughed out loud. There’s something about that kind of laughter that makes you feel welcome, you know?

After that we hit Cenote Xunaan Ha, where you can actually jump right in if you’re feeling brave (I needed a minute). It’s open sky above and thick jungle all around—smelled green and earthy, almost peppery. Some locals were already swimming laps by the time we got there; one waved as he climbed up the rocks barefoot, dripping wet. The last cenote was Taak Bi Ha, which is underground—so dark at first my eyes took ages to adjust. The water here is impossibly clear and cold enough to make your teeth ache. You can hear every drip echoing off the cave walls.

Sofia offered to take us for ceviche after (not included), but honestly we were still buzzing from the swim and wanted to just sit in the sun for a bit before heading back. The whole thing never felt rushed or forced—she let us linger wherever we wanted. I still think about that weird quiet in Taak Bi Ha sometimes; it sticks with you longer than you’d expect.
