The experience

The tour starts at Frigate restaurant, where your guide meets you before leading you to the boat. Once on the water, you enter the mangrove channels of the reserve itself: a maze of roots and shallow passages where the birds and crocodiles actually live. Your guide will point out cormorants, herons and pelicans as they move through the trees, and spend time searching for crocodiles in their natural habitat rather than in a pen or pool.

After the mangrove section, the boat moves to the flamingo feeding area where you'll see the pink flamingos gathered, then continues to the Mayan bath: a natural mineral deposit in the water that locals use as an exfoliant. You'll have about 15 minutes to rinse off in the unspoilt beach area before the return journey. Life jackets and binoculars are provided, and a visual bird guide helps you identify what you're seeing. The tour ends back at the starting point, where you can use the showers and bathrooms.

Is this one for you?Small groups work well here since the mangrove channels are narrow and the guide can point out wildlife more easily when the boat isn't crowded. If you're traveling with infants, they'll need to sit on an adult's lap throughout the boat ride.
