The Experience

We were already sweating a bit when we stepped out of the van — you know that early morning haze in Puerto Vallarta, where the air feels thick but somehow hopeful? Raul, our guide (he’s a biologist, but also just really into birds), handed me binoculars and grinned. “Listen,” he said, and I did. There was this constant rustle overhead and then something sharper — almost like laughter — which turned out to be a Green Jay. I’d only seen pictures before. The colors looked unreal against all that green.

The path through the semi-deciduous forest was muddy in spots. My shoes squelched once or twice (should’ve worn boots), but nobody cared. Raul pointed out a Cinnamon Hummingbird darting between flowers, so quick it made my head spin. He kept jotting down names on our little checklist, sometimes pausing to let us try spotting them first. At one point, we just stood there in silence while sunlight filtered through the canopy — not sure why that felt so good.

Later we piled back into the van for the drive to Banderas Bay’s edge, windows down so we could catch bits of salty air. The mangroves near the Ameca River were buzzing with life — herons stalking the shallows, tiny crabs everywhere. Raul set up his spotting scope and let us take turns; I fumbled with it at first (still don’t know how he finds anything so fast). Someone spotted a Black-throated Magpie-Jay with its crazy tail feathers — everyone got excited at once, even Raul.

Snack time happened under this palapa roof by the water. Coffee tasted extra earthy after all that fresh air. We swapped stories about birds we’d missed or maybe just imagined seeing — hard to tell sometimes. I still think about that moment when everything slowed down and you could hear nothing but wings and distant waves.
