The Experience

Meet your guide at the Romantic Zone bus stop in Puerto Vallarta and head to Boca de Tomatlán, a fishing village where the hike begins. From there, you walk the coastline to Colomitos, the smallest beach in the bay—crystal-clear water and white sand where you can snorkel with provided life jackets, swim, or order a beer from a beach stand. The route continues to Playa Madagascar's white sands, then Playa Los Caballos, where local food vendors sell fresh fruit, coconut drinks and cold cerveza if you want a break. Throughout the hike, your guide points out native plants, birds, reptiles and other wildlife along the jungle paths and rocky terrain.

This is a challenging hike: expect steep inclines, uneven surfaces and narrow trails through dense jungle. The full outing runs 5.5 hours total, with 4+ miles of actual hiking in full sun exposure. Bring water, a hat, sunblock and swimwear. The hike is not suitable for travelers under 10 or over 70, those with joint or mobility issues, recent surgery, heart conditions, spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health—a high level of physical fitness is required.

The day ends at a seafood restaurant on Playa Las Animas, where you can order a meal or a cold margarita and relax on the beach. From there, a boat ride takes you back to Boca de Tomatlán and then to Puerto Vallarta. Your guide handles the route and timing; photos taken on your phone are included. If you prefer car pickup and drop-off at your hotel instead of meeting at the bus stop, that option is available for an additional fee.
