The experience
Muyil sits deep in the jungle between Tulum and the coast, and the tour starts there. Your guide walks you through the archaeological site, explaining the Maya calendar, ceremonies and the arrival of Spanish invaders while the forest closes in around the stone structures. The ruins themselves are less crowded than the major sites inland, and the guide's knowledge of the place (not just the facts but the layout and the sightlines) shapes how you move through it.
After Muyil, you head to the lagoons. A boat takes you across two freshwater bodies connected by Xlapak, an artificial canal that has carried water for centuries. Then comes the lazy river: you float for over 30 minutes in pluvial water on its way to the Caribbean, surrounded by mangroves, orchids, bromeliads and cacti. The current does the work. You drift and listen to the sounds of the reserve. This is the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a protected stretch of coast and inland water that few tourists see this way.
The tour wraps with a Mexican food tasting (tacos, specifically) to close the day. You travel in an air-conditioned minivan with your group, and the driver handles pickup from your hotel and the return. Bring a towel, bathing suit, hat, sunglasses, comfortable shoes and cash. Most local vendors don't take cards. Bottled water and snacks travel with you.

Is this one for you?Six hours is long enough to explore Muyil thoroughly and float the full length of the canal, but short enough to leave your afternoon free if you're staying in Tulum. If your hotel is north of Tulum (in Playa del Carmen, Cancun or the airport area), pickup costs extra depending on distance, so confirm the fee before you book.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (under 4): free.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is Muyil and why is it less known than Chichen Itza or Tulum?
Muyil is an ancient Maya city hidden in the jungle south of Tulum, smaller and less excavated than the major ruins but still significant. The site sits deep enough inland that most day-trippers skip it, which means you walk through the structures and the surrounding forest without the crowds that pack the famous sites.
How long is the lazy river float and what does the water look like?
The float lasts over 30 minutes down a freshwater canal lined with mangroves, orchids, bromeliads and cacti. The water is pluvial, rainwater collected in the lagoons, and flows toward the Caribbean Sea. You drift rather than paddle, so the current carries you while you watch the jungle pass.
What's included in the tour price, and do I need to bring anything?
Hotel pickup and drop-off, an air-conditioned minivan, a professional guide, bottled water, snacks and Mexican food are included. Bring a towel, bathing suit, hat, sunglasses, comfortable shoes, a camera and cash for any extras. Most local vendors accept cash only.
What if my hotel is far from Tulum, like in Cancun or Playa del Carmen?
Pickup is included from your hotel, but there's an extra charge depending on how far north you are: $10 per person from the Conrad Tulum area, up to $45 per person from Cancun Downtown or the airport. You'll see the exact fee at checkout based on your hotel location.
