The Experience

“You see those stairs?” our guide grinned, pointing up at the Pyramid of the Sun. I could already feel the morning sun on my neck, and honestly, I wasn’t sure if I’d make it to the top. But there was something about standing in Teotihuacan—just us, no crowds pushing past—that made me want to try. The stone felt cool under my hands as we climbed, and halfway up I stopped just to listen: wind moving over dry grass, someone laughing far below. Our guide started telling us stories about how people used to gather here centuries ago, their voices echoing off these same stones. It’s strange—I still think about that view from the top, all hazy blue and endless.

Afterwards we drove back toward Mexico City in this air-conditioned van (thank god for that), passing street vendors selling sweet tamarind and little clay suns. We stopped at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe—our guide explained why so many people come here every year, some on their knees. Inside it was quieter than I expected, candles flickering everywhere, that waxy smell mixing with flowers. One woman nodded at us as she prayed; I tried not to stare but it felt important somehow. We had time to just sit for a minute before heading out again.

The last stop was the Monument to the Revolution. You can take an elevator most of the way up (my legs were grateful) and then you get this wide view over Mexico City—rooftops stretching forever, a bit smoggy but beautiful anyway. We grabbed drinks at a terrace nearby; our guide told us how this place used to be a political flashpoint, now it’s just people taking selfies or sharing snacks on benches. I didn’t expect to feel so connected after just one day trip from Mexico City—maybe it was all those small moments in between stops that stuck with me more than anything else.
