The Experience

I was late to the meeting spot because I got distracted by a street vendor selling tamales—should’ve known better, but the smell just pulled me in. Luis told us about Templo Mayor’s ruins just around the corner—Aztec stones poking through modern pavement—and I realized how many layers this city has stacked on itself. He even taught us how to say “Tenochtitlan” properly (I definitely didn’t get it right). We ducked into a boutique hotel for mezcal tasting—smoky and sharp—and then someone bought a tiny clay jaguar from a shop run by two sisters who laughed at our Spanish.

The best part? That last rooftop stop as sunset hit—the city below glowing orange, breeze finally cooling things off. My drink left salt on my lips and I watched kids chasing pigeons on the plaza far below. I still think about that view sometimes when I hear traffic outside my window back home.
