The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the faint smell of salt in the air when our driver, Jorge, pulled up outside our hotel in Mazatlán. He greeted us with a quick “buenos días” and a grin that made me feel like we’d already met. My backpack felt heavier than it should have (maybe too many souvenirs?), but he just swung it into the trunk like it weighed nothing. The van was cool inside—thank god for air conditioning—and there were bottles of water waiting for us on the seat. We waved goodbye to Mazatlán as we rolled out, the city slowly giving way to stretches of highway and flashes of green fields.

I kept catching glimpses of the Pacific through breaks in the trees—sometimes just flashes of silver light—and by late afternoon we were winding down into Puerto Vallarta.

Jorge helped us unload at our Airbnb and gave one last wave before heading off. It’s funny—I thought this would just be another transfer, but now I kind of miss that van and those quiet stretches of road. Sometimes it’s not really about where you’re going, you know?
