The Experience

The drive out from Monterrey to La Huasteca Canyon isn’t long—maybe 20 minutes? But it felt like we’d crossed into another world. Our guide, Mario, was already joking about how locals come here to “breathe again” after city weeks. The air really did smell different—like stone after rain, even though the sky was clear that morning. I kept rolling down the window just to catch more of it.

We stopped first at Pico Independencia’s main wall. I didn’t realize how massive it would look up close—gray rock shooting up so high my neck hurt looking for the top. There were climbers way above us (tiny dots), and Mario pointed out their route names in Spanish. He tried teaching me one—“La Vía del Dragón”—but I probably mangled it. He laughed anyway. We wandered along a dry canyon bed next; the ground crunched under our shoes and there was this weird hush except for a couple of birds arguing somewhere overhead.

I’m not much of a photographer but even I couldn’t resist taking out my phone every five minutes. Something about the light bouncing off those rocks makes everything look sharper than real life. At Zona Extrema we watched some kids learning to climb—one of them waved at us with chalky hands. It made me wish I’d brought my niece along; she would’ve loved scrambling over those boulders.

By noon it was getting warm enough that bottled water tasted better than any soda could’ve. We found shade under a low tree while Mario told us stories about old parties in the canyon—apparently people used to sneak in at night for bonfires before it got popular. That part stuck with me, somehow. On the way back I kept thinking about how close all this is to Monterrey, but how far away it feels when you’re actually here.
