The experience

You start early, pickup at 7:00 am, and drive 25 minutes north to the Puerto Suelo lagoon. A small panga boat ferries you across to the ocean side, where the view opens up before you board the kayak. From there the paddling begins: you move through mangrove tunnels where the trees form a canopy overhead, then follow the river channels inland. The birds change with the season (rosetta spoonbills, herons, hawks, parrots, aningas, pelicans, kingfishers and storks all pass through here depending on the time of year), and the guide points them out as you paddle.

The route takes you upriver to the sandbar, where the ocean and mainland views open again before you paddle back to the dock. The whole paddle is about three and a half hours, and you're in an air-conditioned vehicle for the drive both ways. Life jackets and all kayak gear are provided. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent, a hat and sunglasses. At the end, the operator offers authentic Oaxacan food like sopes and quesadillas for purchase on site, though these aren't included in the trip price.
