Step-by-step itinerary
Night kayak and bioluminescence
- Receive instructions
- Start kayaking towards Punta Mosquito
- Observe bioluminescence on sandbank
- Swim to see glowing microorganisms
- Watch stars and Milky Way if clear sky
The experience
The kayak leaves from shore and paddles roughly 2 km toward Punta Mosquito, moving away from the island's light to find the densest concentration of plankton. Once you reach the sandbank, you step out and walk across it at low tide: each footprint and handprint glows blue or green as the bioluminescent organisms respond to movement. The effect shifts with the tide and season, ranging from faint traces to intense light with every motion.
After the sandbank walk, you swim in deeper water where the phenomenon takes on a different character: thousands of microorganisms ignite around your body with each stroke, sometimes forming a neon halo. If the sky is clear, the Milky Way and planets appear overhead, creating a mirror effect between the glowing water below and the stars above. The guide explains what you're seeing in real time and points out the best viewing angles.
Ground transportation picks you up and returns you to your location. The kayak, life jacket and dry bag are provided. The outing runs roughly two hours from start to finish. Bioluminescence intensity varies naturally (some nights it reaches full brightness, other nights it's more subtle), and the guide positions the group in the areas most likely to show the effect clearly.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 7 years). Under 3: they can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What exactly is the bioluminescence I'll see when kayaking at Holbox?
Bioluminescent dinoflagellates, microscopic organisms, emit blue or green light when disturbed by movement. When you walk on the sandbank, each step triggers light in your footprints. In the water, your paddle strokes and swimming motions create glowing trails around you. The intensity varies naturally depending on the season and tide.
Do I need kayaking experience to paddle at Punta Mosquito?
No prior experience is required. The paddle to Punta Mosquito covers roughly 2 km in calm, protected waters, and the guide gives instructions before you leave shore. The route stays in safe areas chosen for visibility of the bioluminescence.
Will I see the Milky Way and stars during the night kayaking?
Yes, if the sky is clear. The Milky Way and planets are often visible, and the reflection in the luminescent water creates a doubled effect: stars above and glowing plankton below. Cloud cover or moonlight can reduce visibility, but the bioluminescence itself does not depend on clear skies.
What's included in the kayaking experience, and what do I need to bring?
The experience includes the kayak, life jacket, dry bag, ground transportation to and from your location, and a guide in English or Spanish. Bring a swimsuit, towel and any personal items you want to keep dry. The dry bag protects essentials during the paddle and swim.
How long does the entire kayaking experience take?
The outing runs roughly two hours from pickup to return, including paddling to Punta Mosquito, the sandbank walk, swimming in the luminescent water, and the return journey.
