The hike begins at Paso de Cortés, a high mountain pass at 3,500 meters where the air is already thin and the forest shifts from the lowland valleys below. You walk through stands of pine, oak and oyamel trees where the endemic Teporingo rabbit lives, then gradually the landscape opens as you climb. The forest thins into alpine scrub, and the rocky volcanic terrain takes over: each zone a different world stacked on top of the last. Throughout the ascent, Popocatépetl's fumaroles are visible across the ridge, and on clear days Pico de Orizaba (Mexico's highest mountain) and the Sierra Negra come into view.
The route covers 15 kilometers with an option to extend to 18 kilometers for those who want to reach 4,200 meters. A bilingual guide leads the way and stops several times to let you rest, drink and eat: snacks, fruits and energy drinks are provided during the climb, and a vegetarian lunch is included. Walking poles and hiking helmets are supplied, and you carry 1.5 liters of water plus a rehydrating sports drink. Private transport picks you up from your hotel in Puebla City and handles park entry, so the only thing you arrange is showing up ready to walk.
The full day runs 12 hours from pickup to return, which accounts for the drive, the hike itself and the descent. The terrain is steep enough to feel like real climbing, but the guide sets the pace and the stops are frequent. If you've hiked before at altitude or at sea level with good endurance, the fitness level works. If you're new to hiking or have any doubt about your cardiovascular health, talk to the operator before booking.
