The experience

You start with private pickup from Morelia and drive to the volcano site. Once there, you have the choice to ride a horse or walk to the church ruins. The horseback option is available for an extra cost if you want it. Either way, you'll climb across the volcanic rock field itself, moving through the lava formations that erupted in 1943 and buried the church beneath them. A local guide who has worked this area for over 25 years leads the way and explains what you're standing in.

After you've spent time at the ruins, there's a lunch break. Then the day shifts to Uruapan National Park, where the landscape changes completely: lush vegetation, spring-fed waterfalls and fountains replace the stark volcanic terrain. You walk through the park with your guide, spotting local plant and animal species as you move through the greenery. The whole excursion runs about 8 hours from start to finish.

What’s included
