The experience
Hotel pickup gets you to the starting point, then you're matched with one of the local trained horses. The guide teaches you the fundamentals before you saddle up: how to hold the reins, how to move with the horse, what to expect from the animal beneath you. This is not a walk-only ride. You'll trot along farmland trails where the terrain and the pace let you feel what riding actually is.
The route runs through working farmland and into views of the mountains and the Oaxacan coast. You'll pass farm animals (cattle, chickens, the life of the region), and watch birds move in formation overhead. The guide talks about the history of horses in Mexico and what they meant to the people who worked this land. Five hours is long enough to move past the nerves and into the rhythm of it.
Bring sunscreen and insect repellent. A hat and sunglasses help. Casual clothes work fine. The guide handles the route and the pacing. Your job is to stay present in the saddle and let the horse do what it knows how to do.
