A steep 40-minute climb lands you at the ruins before most tourists wake up.

Hike to Monte Albán at sunrise from Oaxaca City with a local guide who shares the myths and history of the Zapotec site. Climb for roughly 40 minutes to the first viewpoint, rest at La Mona while learning about the rituals and place names, then reach the highest point for a 360-degree view of the valley. After exploring the free archaeological zone and hearing about the ball court and temples, you have time to wander the ruins at your own pace before heading back to the city by taxi or bus.

The experience

Two and a half hours is all this takes, which means you can fit it into a morning and still have the rest of your day free. The hike starts steep but moves at your own pace, with 5- to 10-minute breaks built in so the guide can tell you the stories and legends tied to each spot. The first 40 minutes of climbing gets you to views of the city at dawn. From there the path continues through pine trees to La Mona, a resting point where people gather to talk about rituals and the origin of Oaxaca's name.

The highest point gives you a 360-degree view of the valley, and then you reach the archaeological zone itself. The part that is free to enter. Here you'll see the ball court, temples and ritual sites of the Zapotec civilization laid out in front of you. After a snack and an ice pop, you're free to spend as much time as you want inside the ruins. There's no rush to leave. When you're ready, you take a taxi or bus back to the city center on your own.

The guide speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese, and the walk welcomes children from age 1 (babies can be held the whole way). The operator has been leading these hikes for more than 3 years and knows the mountain and its stories well enough to make the climb feel like a conversation rather than a tour.
