The experience
The hike covers 5 km and climbs 850 meters through tropical forest to the summit of Pico de la Pava. Approximately 5 hours of walking gets you there, moving through the medium-high jungle that blankets the region. At the top, the view opens to where three state borders meet (Chiapas, Veracruz and Tabasco), and you can see the formations of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and the Malpaso Dam, one of Mexico's most important. A certified hiking guide leads the way in English or Spanish, and the pace is set for moderate fitness. Children from age 8 are welcome on the route.
The descent brings you back to base camp, where the day ends with a meal cooked by the community: typical food from the Sierra de Tabasco, eaten together. This is not a quick summit-and-go: the full outing runs about 13 hours, including the drive, the hike up and down, and the time at the table. An air-conditioned vehicle picks you up and returns you at the end. Activities insurance is included, and the guide carries a camera to capture photos and videos of the day.

Is this one for you?Small groups work best here (you'll hike with a guide and the community, not a large tour group), and the full 13-hour day suits travelers who want to move through the landscape and end with the people who live in it, not just pass through.
