Ride through centuries of mining history on mountain paths and colonial roads.

A private guided bicycle tour through Guanajuato's mining towns combines a 3.5-hour ride with cultural and natural history. You pedal from Valenciana's 18th-century mine through Santa Rosa de Lima, cross a section of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, pass the Temple of Mineral del Monte de San Nicolás and the Mata Dam, and finish in Paxtitlan, a Nahua neighborhood. The guide speaks English or Spanish and covers the region's mining past, present-day life, local festivities, and the birds, plants and trees of the Sierra de Santa Rosa.

The experience

The tour starts with hotel pickup and a brief ride through the Valenciana neighborhood, where the guide explains the 18th-century mine that shaped the region's wealth. From there you head to Santa Rosa de Lima to collect bikes and receive instructions before setting out on the main ride: a section of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the historic trade route that connected Mexico City to the silver mines of the north.

Along the way you stop at the Temple of Mineral del Monte de San Nicolás and the Mata Dam, both landmarks tied to the area's mining and settlement history. The ride ends in Paxtitlan, one of the first Nahua neighborhoods in the region, whose name comes from the paxtle plant that once grew there. Throughout the route the guide shares details about local customs, festivities, wildlife and the trees and plants of the Sierra de Santa Rosa: turning the ride into a conversation about how people have lived and worked in these mountains.

You'll need a moderate level of fitness for the mountain biking sections, and the tour is not suitable for pregnant travelers. Children from age 8 can join. The bike, helmet, water and accident insurance are provided. Bring your own snacks if you want them during the ride.
