Grutas de Rancho Nuevo & El Arcotete tour from San Cristóbal
Two cave systems in one morning: stalactites underground, then a natural stone arch towering overhead
A guided tour from San Cristóbal de las Casas visits two cave formations in the mountains outside the city. You walk through Rancho Nuevo's underground chambers filled with stalactites and stalagmites, then move on to El Arcotete, where a natural limestone arch frames caverns carved into its 40-meter walls. An air-conditioned vehicle handles the transport, and the whole day wraps by mid-afternoon.

The experience
Grutas de Rancho Nuevo sits 15 kilometers from San Cristóbal de las Casas. The caves themselves are the draw: you walk inside the mountain to see stalactites and stalagmites spreading through the chambers, with the formations deepening as you move back. The park also has walking trails through the grounds, a long slide for families, and food vendors selling chorizo quesadillas, the local specialty. The cave section takes roughly an hour and a half.
El Arcotete is the second stop, a natural stone arch with limestone walls that rise 40 meters high. Caverns are exposed along the roof of the arch itself. The rock formations are what make the place notable, and the site also has camping, horse tours and bike routes if you want to linger. You spend about an hour there before heading back to San Cristóbal, arriving around 3 p.m.
The tour includes entry tickets to both sites and all taxes, plus an air-conditioned vehicle for the drive. Your guide speaks Spanish and will be with you throughout. Pickup from your San Cristóbal hotel is part of the booking, so you don't arrange your own transport to the caves.
