Most visitors to Mexico City hunt for Frida Kahlo's most famous paintings ("The Two Fridas," "Henry Ford Hospital"), and then realize they're not here. They're in the Dolores Olmedo Museum, which is closed indefinitely. So you come to Casa Azul instead, the Blue House where she actually lived, suffered, created and died, and you find something better: the work nobody else gets to see. The Blue House itself is the first thing that hits you. The walls are that specific shade of blue (not quite turquoise, not quite cobalt), and the rooms are small, intimate, crowded with her life. You'll see the first self-portraits, unfinished canvases, her books with notes in the margins, her dresses hung in the closet. Photographs line the walls. Her wheelchair sits in one corner. After Casa Azul, the Anahuacalli Museum is a different kind of immersion. Rivera built it as a piece of art itself: a pyramid-shaped structure filled with his personal collection of Mesoamerican sculpture and artifacts. The building is the exhibition. It's quieter than the Blue House, less crowded, and the scale of the pre-Columbian pieces changes how you think about Rivera's own work. Both museums sit in the same neighborhood, Coyoacán, so you can walk between them or take a short taxi ride.

One practical thing: your tickets arrive by email 24 hours before your reservation time, not at a box office. If you want to photograph inside, that's an extra 30 pesos at the museum itself. It's not included with entry. Backpacks and smaller bags can be stored in the cloakroom, but large suitcases aren't accepted. Strollers have a designated parking area outside the house.
