Shallow water and a guide who knows every rock formation

Diving for beginners in Los Arcos de Mismaloya is a three-hour activity starting from Mismaloya beach, where you receive instruction on equipment, then descend with a guide to depths under 10 meters to see marine life among the rock formations. The dive center has operated since 1989 and the guide speaks English or Spanish. Children from age 12 are welcome. Boat, tank, fins, mask, regulator and BCD are included, along with bottled water.

The experience

You meet at the dive center in Mismaloya for a theoretical class on equipment before heading out on the boat. The boat leaves from Mismaloya beach and carries you toward Los Arcos, where the rock formations rise from the water. Once you arrive at the dive site (called the aquarium area because of the marine life), you prepare on the boat with the guide and your team, then enter the water at a depth that does not exceed 10 meters. The guide stays with you the entire time, pointing out fish and other creatures living freely among the rocks.

The dive center has been exploring this underwater area since 1988, so the guide knows which spots are safest and most rewarding for a first dive. The water is clear and the site is protected as a nature reserve. You'll see the arches and rock formations from below as you move through the water, with the guide managing your pace and your comfort. The whole experience (from the theoretical class through the dive and return) takes about three hours.

If you're staying in Mismaloya or nearby without a car, public transportation options are available to reach the dive center. The boat departs from the beach itself, so there's no additional transfer once you arrive. Bring a towel and a change of clothes. The center provides all diving equipment, a tank, and bottled water during the activity.
