The experience

The day starts with a 50-minute drive from Costa Maya through local villages to Chacchoben, where you walk the ruins with your guide for about an hour. The site sits in tropical jungle: temples and ceremonial structures rise among native plants, and you may spot spider monkeys or colorful birds along the trails. The guide explains the history of this ancient Maya city while you move through the structures. Climbing the temples is not permitted, but the walking paths let you see the architecture up close and in context.

After Chacchoben, a 25-minute drive takes you to Bacalar Seven Color Lagoon, where you have roughly two hours at your own pace. The water is freshwater and changes shade across blues and turquoise depending on depth and light. You can swim, paddle a kayak (life jackets provided), or sit on a lounger with a cold drink and watch the water. Children under 10 can kayak with a supervising adult. Solo paddling is for ages 10 and up. A weight limit of 220 pounds applies to single kayaks and 270 pounds to doubles.

Lunch is included and served by the lagoon: freshly made tacos with your choice of chicken fajitas, Spanish sausage with potato, or al pastor, plus chips, salsa and homemade sauces. Soft drinks, water, horchata, hibiscus water and two alcoholic drinks per guest (age 21+) are included. Additional premium beverages are available for purchase. Vegetarian and gluten-free meals can be arranged with advance notice. The return drive to Costa Maya takes about an hour and five minutes, and the tour keeps your cruise departure in mind throughout.
