The Experience

“Don’t worry, amigo — we track your flight even if it’s late,” is the first thing our driver said, holding up a tablet with my name on it outside the terminal. I was still half-asleep from the flight but that made me laugh. The air was thick and warm, smelled like sunscreen and concrete. We walked straight past the crowds to this long, shiny Lincoln stretch limousine waiting by the curb. I’d never actually been in one before — not for an airport transfer anyway.

Inside, it was cool and smelled faintly like leather mixed with coffee. There was a basket of snacks (I grabbed some weirdly addictive peanuts), cold Bui water, and a couple of local beers chilling in the little bar. Our driver handed over wet towels — honestly, those felt so good after hours in recycled plane air. He showed us how to close the curtain for privacy or open the sunroof if we wanted fresh air (we tried both just because we could). My friend tried making espresso with the Nespresso machine; she nearly spilled it when we hit a speed bump near downtown Cancun. We all cracked up — I think that’s when it finally hit me that vacation had started.

The drive from Cancun Airport to Hotel Zone isn’t long — maybe 25 minutes?
