A full day in the Mayan capital most travelers never reach

A full-day tour from Xpujil to Calakmul, the ancient Mayan city buried in Mexico's largest tropical reserve, includes a one-and-a-half-hour drive through the Biosphere Reserve, a four-hour guided walk through the archaeological site, certified guide, entrance fees, water and lunch. The route passes through habitat where jaguars, pumas, monkeys and toucans live, and the tour covers the history and architecture of this Classic period capital on foot.

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Calakmul Mayan city and wildlife

  • Pickup from hotel in Xpujil
  • Drive 1.5 hours to Calakmul Biosphere Reserve
  • Spot wildlife along the drive
  • Walk 3-4 hours through archaeological site
  • Learn about Mayan history and buildings
  • Return drive to Xpujil

The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel in Xpujil and a one-and-a-half-hour drive into the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, which spans over 700,000 square hectares and holds the largest tropical forest in Mexico. The road itself is part of the experience: the reserve opens chances to spot wildlife endemic to the region (monkeys, toucans, ocellated turkeys, deer, and if luck holds, jaguars and pumas), while the air stays clean and fresh as you move deeper into the jungle.

Once at the archaeological site, you walk the paths for approximately four hours with a certified guide who explains the meanings and uses of the buildings and traces the history of Calakmul from the Classic period, when it was one of the main capitals of the Mayan world. The site itself is one of the largest archaeological findings of the twentieth century, and the guide's knowledge shapes what you see in the ruins and the landscape around them. Water and a picnic lunch are included, so you eat inside the reserve.

The round-trip between Xpujil and Calakmul takes three to four hours of driving, and the full day runs seven to eight hours total. A minimum of two participants is required for the tour to run. You choose your guide's language (English or Spanish) at checkout.
