The experience
Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve sits 20 minutes south of Tulum and holds nearly 50% of all bird species registered in Mexico: 543 species have been recorded on the Yucatan Peninsula alone. The reserve's location on a major migration route and its mix of jungle, wetlands and coastal habitat make it one of the hemisphere's richest birding destinations. You depart early morning with an expert local guide who knows where to find the birds and can identify them on sight, and you travel with a small group rather than a large tour bus.
The morning takes in mature semi-deciduous jungle and freshwater wetlands where you'll spot 40 to 80 species depending on the season: some endemic to the region, others passing through on migration. The guide carries binoculars for the group and a bird identification book so you can confirm what you've seen. You also visit Muyil, an archaeological site and town where the guide shares the history and culture of the ancient and contemporary Maya people who have lived here for centuries.
The tour runs about three hours total and suits both beginners and experienced birders. Children from age 2 are welcome. Public transportation options are available nearby if you need them, and specialized infant seats can be arranged. If you need private transportation to and from your hotel, that can be added for an extra fee.
