The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel in Playa del Carmen or Tulum, then a drive south to Bacalar: a small town about 30 minutes from Chetumal. Once you arrive, you board a boat for a 2-hour sail through the lagoon itself, the main event. The water shifts through shades of blue and green as you move through different depths and mineral zones. The "7 colors" effect comes from the cenotes and shallow areas that feed into the 42-kilometer-long body of water. You'll pass the Pirates Channel, an artificial waterway connecting northern and central Mayan territories, and stop at Bird Island along the way.

After the boat ride, you swim at Cenote Azul, one of the largest cenotes in the Riviera Maya. It's L-shaped with multiple pools at different depths: shallow areas under shade near the entrance, then a main outdoor swimming area divided into deep and shallow zones. Breakfast is included before you leave the restaurant, and lunch is served there as well. You also get free time to explore Cococalitos, a natural area known as a stromatolite sanctuary where you can use hammocks and swings overlooking the lagoon.

The tour includes a stop at San Felipe Fort in the town center, a 17th-century fortress with views back across the entire lagoon: a good spot for photos and to walk through the downtown.
