The experience
Seven to eight hours takes you through the south in a single arc, starting with Trou aux Cerfs: a dormant volcanic crater surrounded by forest where the views open across the island. From there the route moves to Grand Bassin, a tranquil Hindu pilgrimage site ringed by lush mountains and dominated by a towering statue of Lord Shiva, then continues to Alexandra Falls, a 35-meter waterfall set deep in the Black River Gorges National Park where a forest walk brings you close to the water.
The Black River Gorges Viewpoint itself delivers panoramic vistas across deep ravines and dense forest canopy, followed by La Vallee des Couleurs, where the Twenty Three Colored Earths create a striking landscape of rainbow-hued sands and waterfalls. You can walk through the park and photograph the formations. Quad biking, zip-lining and other activities there are available separately if you want them. The day ends at Gris Gris Beach on the southern coast, where dramatic cliffs and powerful waves frame the Indian Ocean: swimming is not safe due to the currents, but the rock formations and coastal views reward a walk along the shore.
Lunch is a three-course Mauritian meal at La Marie, a restaurant in the island's heart surrounded by greenery, where you'll taste local dishes blending Creole, Indian and Chinese flavors: fresh seafood, curry, and traditional desserts. Your driver and guide handle all the stops and timing, and the vehicle is air-conditioned throughout. Bottled water is provided, and the tour suits all fitness levels. Infants and small children can travel in a pram or with a specialized infant seat.
