The experience
The tour opens in Nouakchott with four separate stops that anchor you in local life before the desert journey begins. You spend 90 minutes at the Artisanal Port watching pirogues unload the day's catch and fishermen at work in the market, then another 90 minutes at the Camel Market where hundreds of dromedaries and their breeders negotiate sales using methods unchanged for centuries. The National Museum takes an hour to walk through collections of archaeology, manuscripts and traditional art tracing Mauritania from prehistory onward. A final 45-minute stop at the artisanal bazaars lets you watch craftsmen and browse textiles, metalwork and jewelry before leaving the capital.
Day two moves inland toward the Adrar region, passing through Akjoujt's mining landscape and stopping for an hour in Atar to walk its traditional streets and local market. The Tergit Oasis near Atar is where you eat a traditional Mauritanian meal in the shade of palms, then continue to Chinguetti, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its 12th-century mosque with a square minaret and the Habott Library, which holds centuries-old manuscripts on religion, science and poetry. Sunset here illuminates the sandstone streets in gold light.
The final two days focus on heritage sites and geology. You visit the Old Mosque of Ouadane, built in the 13th century as a former caravan town, then drive to the Richat Structure, the Eye of Africa, a 40-kilometer-wide concentric circle visible from space, formed by millions of years of erosion. Private transport moves you between all stops. An air-conditioned vehicle handles the desert roads. Meals and accommodation in 3-star hotels in Nouakchott and local guesthouses in the desert towns are arranged for you.
