The Experience

I nearly walked right past our guide at Freedom Square — she was waving a tiny Maltese flag, which felt a bit touristy but also kind of comforting since the square was buzzing with school kids and old men arguing about football in Maltese. We started weaving through Valletta’s narrow streets, sunlight bouncing off the honey-colored stone. I kept getting distracted by the wooden balconies overhead (they’re everywhere here) and the smell of pastizzi from a bakery somewhere nearby. Our guide, Maria, had this way of telling stories that made me forget we were on a “tour” — she pointed out carvings above doorways and told us how the Knights of Malta used to live here, which sounded both glamorous and exhausting.

At one point we ducked into a quiet courtyard where you could hear church bells echoing off the walls. Maria explained how Valletta was built after the Great Siege of 1565 — honestly, I didn’t expect to get so caught up in all that history stuff, but it just kind of grabs you when you’re standing right there. We wandered past auberges (I still can’t pronounce that word) and palaces with paint peeling in the sun. There was this moment in the Upper Barrakka Gardens where everyone just went silent looking out over Grand Harbour — ships moving slowly below, gulls circling overhead. It smelled faintly of sea air mixed with flowers from someone’s garden patch.

The last stop was St. John’s Co-Cathedral — tickets weren’t included so we bought them at the door (easy enough). Inside it was almost too much: gold everywhere, marble floors cold underfoot even though it was warm outside. Maria led us to Caravaggio’s “Beheading of St John,” and I just stood there for a while trying to take it all in while someone whispered prayers behind me.
