The experience
Mdina reveals itself differently at night. The narrow streets that have stayed nearly unchanged for a thousand years are lit by old lanterns at every turn, and the medieval palazzos and baroque churches glow against the dark. From the high bastion walls you can see almost half the island sparkling beneath you. The tour begins with a drive around Valletta, where the 16th-century fortifications and bastions are beautifully lit up: a sight the daytime crowds never see the same way.
After Valletta, you stop at the Valletta Waterfront, a promenade in the Grand Harbor area lined with nineteen restored 18th-century warehouses that once stored goods for the Knights of St. John. The iconic doors are painted in colors that represent what was kept inside: blue for fish, green for produce, yellow for wheat, red for wine. At night the area fills with locals and tourists moving between heritage buildings now turned into bars and restaurants. You get free time here to walk, eat or simply sit by the water. Then the tour moves west to Rabat, a charming village with narrow winding streets, Roman archaeological sites and fine churches and monasteries, before heading into Mdina itself for the main walk through the old city.
Your pickup happens between 7:30 PM and 8:30 PM depending on where you're staying. You'll confirm the exact time and location with the operator a few days before. The guide speaks the language you booked (English, Italian, French or German), though occasionally a multilingual guide may provide commentary in up to two languages.
