You check in at the ticketing booth near the pier (either Marfa opposite Riviera Spa Resort, or Ċirkewwa behind the cafe kiosk), and within minutes you're on the water. Twenty to twenty-five minutes later, you're anchored in the Blue Lagoon, and that's where the real difference kicks in: there's no departure time waiting for you, no guide herding the group back to the boat at three o'clock sharp. You swim, you float, you explore the other bays around Comino on your own pace, and when you're done—whether that's two hours or five—you just walk back to the same spot and board the next ferry home. They run every thirty minutes, so if you miss one, the next one is half an hour away.

The crossing itself passes the Comino Sea Caves, those pale limestone cliffs that drop straight into the water, and the Mediterranean here is so clear you can see the seabed shift from sand to rock. If you're on a boat leaving Marfa after 3pm or Ċirkewwa after 3:10pm, the caves won't be part of the route—the light changes and the operators skip that section—so timing matters if that's what you came for. The boats aren't fancy, and they're not wheelchair-accessible, but they're sturdy and pet-friendly, so your dog can come along. Strollers work too, and infants just sit on a lap. If you're prone to seasickness, this isn't the ride for you; the water can chop, especially in winter.

The Gozo option works like this: you take the ferry to Comino, spend as long as you want there, then board a second ferry from the same spot heading to Mġarr Harbour in Gozo. Those departures run at 11am, noon, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm. Once you're in Gozo, though, you're arranging your own way back to Malta—either the Gozo Channel ferry or the Gozo Highspeed service. That's not included in the price, and it's worth knowing before you book. The whole setup means you're not locked into a schedule the way you are on other boat trips. You pick your departure window on the day itself—no time slot booking required—and you move at your own rhythm.
