The Experience

“You want to see the real Malta?” our driver, Joseph, grinned at us in the rearview mirror as we pulled away from the Valletta Waterfront. I was still chewing on a pastizz he’d handed me (so flaky it left crumbs everywhere — sorry about the mess, Joseph), and outside the window, those honey-colored buildings blurred into sun. He played an old Maltese song on low volume and pointed out where British ships once docked. It was weirdly moving — I didn’t expect to feel anything at a cruise terminal, but there you go.

Popeye Village came up next. It’s this oddball film set from the 80s that’s now full of kids running around in sailor hats. The bay sparkled so bright it hurt my eyes for a second. We didn’t stay long — just enough for a photo and to watch a family try (and fail) to get their toddler to pose with Popeye himself. Then off again, winding through roads lined with prickly pears toward Ta’ Qali Crafts Village. The glassblowers were mid-demo when we arrived; I stood too close and nearly jumped when the flame whooshed up. There’s something hypnotic about watching someone shape molten glass — makes you want to try it yourself, but I’d probably just burn my fingers.

The Blue Grotto was busier than I thought it’d be — lots of laughter echoing off the rocks and the kind of blue you only see in postcards or screensavers. Joseph told us about its movie cameo (Troy — Brad Pitt wasn’t here today though). By then the van had that faint scent of sea air mixed with pastry crumbs and sunscreen. Last stop: Malta National Aquarium for a quick walk-through under sharks gliding overhead. Kids pressed their noses to the glass; one waved at an eel like they were old friends.

We finished back near Valletta as golden light hit everything just right. I still think about that drive between stops: Joseph telling stories about WWII tunnels or how his grandmother used to make imqaret by hand. There’s something about letting someone else handle the roads here — you notice more little details out your window, you know?
