The Experience

"You ever tried dodging trishaws in Dutch Square?" our driver, Hafiz, grinned as we pulled up to the red buildings of Malacca. I’d barely finished my coffee from the car when the square hit me — all that color and noise, schoolkids posing for photos, the clatter of wheels on old bricks. Hafiz pointed out the Stadthuys, explaining how it used to be the Dutch governor’s office. The air smelled faintly sweet — maybe incense from a nearby temple? I kept getting distracted by people selling pineapple tarts from little carts. We wandered over to A Famosa next; honestly, I didn’t expect much from a ruined gate but standing there you could almost feel how many times this city changed hands.

Lunch was at some place Hafiz knew just off Jonker Walk — plastic chairs, fans spinning lazily overhead. He ordered for us (I’d have no clue otherwise), and I still think about that chicken rice ball. There was this moment where an old uncle at the next table started chatting with us in a mix of Malay and English — he wanted to know where we were from and why we came all this way for “just one day.” It made me laugh. After lunch we walked along the Riverside Artwalk — murals everywhere, boats gliding past below. The sun was out but not too harsh; you could smell river water mixed with spices from nearby stalls.

We stopped at the Straits Mosque too — it looks like it’s floating right over the sea when the tide’s up. Shoes off, cool tiles underfoot. Hafiz told us about Friday prayers here; his voice dropped a bit out of respect. Later he left us near Jonker Walk for a few hours of wandering on our own (he said “get lost in the best way”). I bought a tiny tin Peranakan teapot I’ll probably never use but couldn’t resist. The river cruise at dusk was optional but honestly worth it — lanterns flickering on both banks, families waving from bridges. We drove back tired but kind of full in every sense.
