You’ll wander Lilongwe’s lively markets with a local guide, sample street food at the heart of Old Town, meet rescued wildlife at the famous centre, and hear stories behind Malawi’s cultural landmarks. Every stop feels personal — you’ll leave with new tastes, sounds and faces stuck in your memory.
We were already winding through the bustle of Old Town when I realized how much Lilongwe is a patchwork — smells of grilled maize mixing with car horns and laughter from shopfronts. Our guide, Chikondi, waved to someone every few steps (I think he knew half the city). He showed us where people still haggle for tomatoes at the food market, and I tried nsima from a stall — hot, plain, but somehow comforting. My fingers smelled like woodsmoke after. The city felt alive in a way I didn’t expect.
At Tindoz d’Afrique, there was this explosion of color — textiles and crafts piled everywhere. I asked about a carved mask and an old woman told me it was for “protection from bad dreams.” She smiled when I tried to repeat it in Chichewa (not well). The walk to Lilongwe Wildlife Centre was quieter; birds overhead and that earthy after-rain smell. We watched rescued monkeys swing around while our guide explained how it’s the world’s first accredited PAW center. Didn’t know that before.
Later we stopped by Kumbali Cultural Village — drums echoing somewhere behind the huts — and then on to Kamuzu Mausoleum. It’s stark white, almost solemn. Someone left fresh flowers on the steps. The Parliament Building looked out of place, all glass and sharp lines against everything else. Tobacco Auction Floors were closed but Chikondi described the chaos when they’re open (“like a storm,” he said). By then my feet were tired but I didn’t really want to leave yet.
